A special Anzac Day at home

Australians have gathered since 1916 by their town’s war memorials to remember the fallen, the wounded and all those who serve.

These memorials, big and small, represent the cost of war on individuals, families and the nation.

This year, some of our soldiers returned home to their communities to commemorate Anzac Day.

Craftsman Cameron Powell from 1 Aviation Regiment said he was proud to march with Vietnam veterans and discover the rich history of his hometown in Broomfield, Victoria.

“To send people back home for Anzac Day in my opinion is an amazing opportunity for everyone,” Craftsman Powell said.

“Meeting George Glenn Hepburn, nicknamed Tiny, was one of the highlights of my day. He is 90 years old, and served in Vietnam as a maintainer in 161st (Independent) Reconnaissance Flight.

“This was a particularly important moment for me to meet someone who not only is in my trade but also served in the same Squadron I am now serving with.

“It was a real privilege to connect with other veterans as well those from the Tunnel Rats of Vietnam.

“I was very fortunate to hear many stories and meet many veterans from my home area.”

Craftsman Powell said he also spent time with his family and interacted with community members.

“To enjoy and remember that day within my hometown on Anzac Day was something very special to me,” Craftsman Powell said.
