We must Remember – at 11 on the 11th

Today, on Remembrance Day, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan encouraged all Australians to reflect on the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have died in defence of our nation.

11am on 11 November marks the anniversary of the Armistice in 1918 that ended the fighting in the First World War.

At this time, the nation observes a minute’s silence for more than 102,000 Australians who have died serving our country in all wars and theatres of conflict.

“I encourage everyone to pause and reflect in silence at 11am on Remembrance Day and think about the lives cut short and the hole that that left in the lives of mothers, fathers, brother, sisters, families, friends, communities and our nation,” Mr Tehan said.

“In doing so, we seek to understand the price we have paid for our freedoms and values and we honour those who are prepared to serve in defence of our nation.

“We must never forget those who gave their lives so that we can live ours.”

Mr Tehan will honour Australia’s servicemen and women at the Remembrance Day National Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial today.
