RAAF rescues Aussies from Port Sudan

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Penny Wong said on Twitter this morning that a Royal Australian Air Force aircraft has evacuated Australians and foreign nationals from war-torn South Sudan overnight.

There is no official information from Defence or DFAT at this time – only the following, from Minister Wong’s personal Twitter account.

“Australia supported the international evacuation effort overnight with a flight carrying 36 Australians and their family members, as well as citizens from six other countries,” Ms Wong’s Tweet said.

“Thank you to @DefenceAust and @dfat officials on the ground.

“More than 190 Australians and their family members have now departed Sudan.

“We are in contact with registered Australians on further departure options from Port Sudan.

“Australians who want to leave Sudan should strongly consider leaving as soon as possible.

Senator Wong said, Australians in Sudan should register to receive the latest information from https://crisis.dfat.gov.au/crisisportal/s/

The official Defence version of this mission is now published here.
