Defence Minister Linda Reynolds in hospital with heart issues

Minister for Defence Linda Reynolds was admitted to a Canberra Hospital this morning with heart problems.

An official statement said Ms Reynolds would take a period of medical leave after receiving advice from her cardiologist relating to a pre-existing medical condition.

“As a precautionary measure, Minister Reynolds has this morning been admitted to a Canberra Hospital,” the statement said.

Minister Reynolds has been under pressure in the media recently over her handling of a sexual-misconduct case in Parliament House, and was scheduled to address the media at The National Press club today.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Marise Payne will act as Minister for Defence until Minister Reynolds returns from leave.

Marise Payne was previously Australia’s Minister for Defence from September 2015 to August 2018.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison phoned Minister Reynolds this morning to express his concern and sympathy and to wish her a quick recovery.
