Soldier’s mum pops in with muffins for the troops

It’s not every day your mum drops in with biscuits and home-made muffins while you’re on deployment, but that’s what happened to Private Jonathan Amey at Cooma Race Course on 18 January.

Private Amey is an HX77 heavy truck operator with 5 Transport Squadron, part of the 7th Combat Services Support Battalion, currently taking part in Operation Bushfire Assist 19-20.

His mother Deb, father Phil and big brother Stephen are all Cooma locals.

Private Amey said his mum liked to do things for the community so she made some muffins to bring in for his mates.

“The meals and biscuits she brought in were provided by the Lifegate Christian Church,” he said.

The former Monaro High School student has been in the Army for three years.

“I never thought I’d have the opportunity to help out in my hometown,” he said.

“It’s actually thrilling being able to assist my old community and around the district. It’s a good feeling.”

Private Amey’s HX77 heavy truck is mounted with a water purification/desalination system.

“The equipment turns non-potable water into drinking water and can produce 100,000 litres of water a day from salt water or between 200,000-400,000 litres a day from [dirty] fresh water,” he said.
