Indigenous youth in Adelaide invited to taste Air Force life

Next month, the Royal Australian Air Force will conduct an Indigenous Youth Program (IYP) at RAAF Base Edinburgh.

This program, running from 21 to 23 March, is designed to provide young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women with exposure to various skills, trades and life-style experiences.

IYP provides a hands-on, risk-free experience, which showcases some of the careers available within the Royal Australian Air Force.

Attendees will participate in a number of planned activities and will be given a chance to explore different trades available should they wish to pursue an Air Force career once they complete their schooling.

Pilot Officer (AAFC) Paul Rosenzweig, 6 Wing Public Affairs & Communication Officer, said “This is a Defence activity open to all members of the community who meet the selection criteria. However this program may also appeal to Army, Navy and Air Force Cadets, and some younger staff members, interested in pursuing a career with the RAAF”.

This program is available to Indigenous Australians residing in Adelaide, between the ages of 15 and 24. Parental permission is required for applicants under 18 years of age.

Participants will live on base from 21 to 23 March.

If country applicants are successful in being selected, they will be responsible for making their own way to RAAF Edinburgh on the 21st, and home again on the 23rd.

RAAF advise that participants will look through Air Force aircraft, engage with and ask questions of Air Force personnel, and speak with Defence Force recruiting staff about all opportunities for Air Force employment.

They will experience Air Force life, including living quarters, meals, training and some leadership activities.

Participants may also have an opportunity to fly in an Air Force aircraft and experience an aircraft simulator.

Applications are open now, and will close on 1 March 2017.

Apply at www.defence.gov.au/workexperience via the ‘Current Work Experience Placements’.

There will be more IYP activities held in various locations throughout the year.
