For two months, more than 60 PNGDF personnel will be integrated across 3rd Combat Service Support Battalion, 3rd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment, 3rd Combat Engineer Regiment and Headquarters 3rd Brigade public affairs cell.

The purpose of the exercise is to work and train closely to enhance interoperability and security cooperation between the two nations.

Deputy Commander 3rd Brigade Colonel Boniface Aruma (PNGDF) said in terms of engagement, it was the biggest exercise by far.

“The PNGDF is really trying to address the capability gaps and look to the future,” Colonel Aruma said.

“We’re trying to upskill and expose the younger generation to best practice, by engaging with our partners, with whom we do a lot of work.”

PNGDF soldiers will embed with soldiers and officers of 3rd Brigade in their specific trades, conducting activities such as combat shooting, demolition, workshop tasks and media engagements.

“I’d like them to take the level of professionalism and attention to detail that the Australian Army possess,” Colonel Aruma said.

“It’s about getting that professional consistency going, so we can slowly change the culture back home and set the PNGDF up for future successes.”

He said Exercise Kumul Exchange was important for the continual growth and development of both militaries.

“It sends a message about how genuine the Australian Army is in their endeavour to contribute to the growth and development of the PNGDF,” Colonel Aruma said.

“It speaks loudly about the strength of the relationship between our two countries that is growing stronger by the day.”
