Brisbane to see biggest-ever armoured parade

Brisbane will witness the largest ever parade of armoured vehicles this Saturday as more than 60 vehicles thunder down Adelaide Street to South Bank Parklands.

2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment (Queensland Mounted Infantry) will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Beersheba with a mounted Freedom of Entry March into Brisbane City on Saturday, 28 October, starting at 10am.

The parade will involve more than 150 soldiers, 20 horses and the largest procession of armoured military vehicles ever seen in Brisbane, with more than 60 vehicles including three of the Regiment’s new M1A1 Abrams tanks.

Lance Corporal Cori Martin, a tank crewman with 2/14 LHR (QMI), and great-great nephew of General Sir Harry Chauvel who led the charge at Beersheba, will be participating in the parade.

Travelling down Adelaide Street, starting at 10am, the parade will be halted and challenged by members of the Queensland Police Force.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk will inspect the troops and allow them to continue armed, with swords and lances drawn, guidons flying, drums beating and band playing.

Best location to view the parade is along Adelaide Street, facing King George Square.

Troops will march along George Street down Adelaide Street towards Creek Street.

Saturday’s parade will be followed by a family fun day at South Bank Parklands from 11am-3pm where you can get up close to the armoured vehicles from the parade and talk to soldiers about them.

You can also step back to WWI with horses and riders from the Queensland Mounted Infantry Historical Troop.

Brisbane’s 7th Brigade has only recently been issued with tanks – marking one of the final components of the Australian Army’s Plan Beersheba and the realisation of the final Armoured Calvary Regiment.
