Over the course of one morning, the squadron aimed to complete 1050 laps of the RAAF Base Amberley running track – one lap for each woman who died of ovarian cancer in 2023.

All up, 2 Security Forces Squadron completed 3521 laps, with some members hitting the track as early as midnight.

At the conclusion of the activity, the squadron’s Executive Officer Squadron Leader Tai Kohn shaved her head in solidarity with the member, along with a number of other 2 Security Forces Squadron personnel, to show their support.

Flying Officer Marat Roche, of 2 Security Forces Squadron, said it was fantastic to see so many people participating and donating.

“It’s incredible that off a week’s notice we were able to raise almost $15,000,” Flying Officer Roche said.

“It is also unreal that so many people got up early to come down and run a few laps in support.

“It is for a fantastic cause and one that is very close to the unit’s heart at the moment so it’s very encouraging to see people from far and wide motivated to increase the amount of funds going towards Cherish Women’s Cancer Foundation.”

The aim is to raise awareness and contribute funds towards further research in the hope that early-detection methods are enhanced and treatment options continue to evolve.

The 2 Security Forces Squadron event had the added effect of fostering esprit de corps between Air Force and Army units in Amberley.

The donation link will remain open until July 31, with all proceeds going to the Cherish Women’s Cancer Foundation.
