Army engineers help return water supply to Nimbin

Army engineers from 6th Engineer Support Regiment have been working tirelessly with workers from Lismore City Council and contractors to replace a water pipeline supplying Nimbin.

The recent flood event caused major damage to the DE Williams Dam, which is the main supply of water to the town.

Commander of Operation Flood Assist, Major General David Thomae, visited the dam during a tour of northern New South Wales.

Major General Thomae also met representatives of local councils in the region to discuss the future of Australian Defence Force (ADF) support on Operation Flood Assist 2022.

“It is important to support local councils in restoring their infrastructure and this is a great example where ADF engineering skills can be used to do so,” Major General Thomae said.

“It allows the councils in this region to move onto the recovery phase.”

Lieutenant Jordan Bell, of 6th Engineer Support Regiment, is leading the restoration efforts of the Nimbin water supply.

“The DE Williams Dam was severely damaged in the flooding, which majorly impacted water supplies to Nimbin,” Lieutenant Bell said.

“Part of our role alongside Lismore City Council is to lay pipe that will restore water supplies to the town.

“It’s been a great opportunity to come out here and help the residents. Being able to assist and support the community to get back on their feet is important.”
