New vehicles to keep Army on the move
Updated collision mitigation, braking technology, digitised fleet management and driver assist systems are some of the features of the new Kenworth prime movers being introduced to Army.

The first 15 vehicles will enter service this month, with a total of 30 prime movers – including Kenworth and Mack models – scheduled for rollout by the end of the first half of next year.
These vehicles will supplement the current heavy transport fleet, including HX81 and commercial prime movers, providing greater flexibility across Defence’s green and white fleet trailers.
Staff Officer Grade 1 Land Mobility, Lieutenant Colonel Zak Looker, who is overseeing the introduction of the vehicles, said the best thing about them was the advanced safety features.
“Our drivers will benefit from modern technology and improved comfort, making operations safer and more efficient,” Lieutenant Colonel Looker said.
They are also fuel-efficient and designed for long-distance line haul, making them ideal for transporting critical assets such as armoured fighting vehicles and the M1110 joint assault bridge.
The prime movers will give Defence a broader and more usable fleet, capable of travelling long distances and carrying heavy loads on the in-service green fleet and commercial white fleet trailers.
“The introduction of these vehicles is a key step in modernising Defence’s heavy transport capability and ensuring we can move critical assets when and where they’re needed,” Lieutenant Colonel Looker said.
Supported by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, Defence will secure road access for the vehicles across Australia.
Training will be conducted through Defence’s export training programs and OEM-led sessions by Kenworth and Mack, ensuring operators are qualified.
The rollout was funded under a $9.45 million budget for this financial year.
“These prime movers provide flexibility that enhances our operational readiness,” Lieutenant Colonel Looker said.
