Army’s 7th Brigade faced a well-trained and lethally armed ‘enemy’ during its South Queensland Warfighter Exercise at Queensland’s Shoalwater Bay Training Area.

Battlegroup Warhorse, based on the 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment (2/14 LHR), was equipped with the new Boxer combat reconnaissance vehicle and the Australian light armoured vehicle.

Battlegroup commander and Commanding Officer 2/14 LHR Lieutenant Colonel Tim Hurley said his team provided a peer opposing force to the brigade’s Battlegroup Ram.

“Unashamedly, I would say that we are a credible and competent battlegroup to fight against, and will really test the brigade’s soldiers,” Lieutenant Colonel Hurley said.

“Our tactics, techniques and procedures are, in my view, excellent. We don’t take shortcuts.

“Having that benchmark to measure yourself against, it’s my job to make sure we meet all of our expectations, requirements and standards so that 7th Brigade has an opportunity, essentially, to fight against what I would think are the very best of us.”

More than 1500 soldiers from Brisbane’s 7th Brigade, together with force elements from the British Army (Royal Ghurkha Rifles), New Zealand Army, Republic of Fiji Armed Forces and His Majesty’s Armed Forces (Tonga) participated in the exercise.
