Air Marshal Chipman said it was a great opportunity to discuss the key defence and security issues facing not only the Middle East, but also Australia’s immediate Indo-Pacific region.

“The energy, food and maritime security issues we explored throughout the Manama Dialogue are global issues,” Air Marshal Chipman said.

“We must share our collective experiences and continue working together to seek lasting solutions.”

The dialogue brought together ministers, senior defence and foreign affairs officials, strategists, economists and media from around the globe.

Air Marshal Chipman welcomed the opportunity to hear diverse perspectives during his visit to Bahrain.

Discussions at the IISS Manama Dialogue 2022 centred on the theme of ‘Rules and competition in the Middle East’.

At a time of unparalleled strategic competition, Air Marshal Chipman emphasised the importance of international partners remaining united to support the rules-based global order.

“It was a pleasure to meet with regional and global partners to reaffirm our mutual commitment to security and stability in the Middle East region,” Air Marshal Chipman said.

“I would like to thank the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain for hosting another successful IISS Manama Dialogue and providing us with the opportunity to come together in a time of heightened uncertainty.”

Air Marshal Chipman conducted a number of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the dialogue and participated in each plenary.

He welcomed the address by keynote speaker Dr Usrula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, which drew timely parallels between Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the enduring challenges in the Middle East region.
