For the second time this year, devastating floods have struck the NSW mid-north coast, leaving communities such as Taree reeling.

As waters rose and residents faced growing uncertainty, the ADF deployed Joint Task Force 629 Emergency Support Force to the region, working alongside the State Emergency Service, police and fire authorities.

Officer Commanding the task force, Major Graham Bannerman, said the ADF was proud to stand by Australians in their time of need.

“We mounted and deployed in less than 24 hours, and quickly integrated with emergency authorities to support the SES,” Major Bannerman said.

“The region is going through a very difficult time, but helping fellow Australians is something we’re proud to do.”

ADF personnel assisted with planning support, route clearance, restoration of access to critical infrastructure and welfare checks for isolated residents.

Private Gershwin Nandoo said the response had been well received by the community.

“One of the ways we’re assisting the SES, and the local community, is through welfare checks,” he said.

“For example, we visited an elderly couple who had been cut off by floodwaters and ensured they were OK.

“The feeling among the team is that we want to help.

“If I were in their shoes, I’d hope someone would do the same for me, so it’s great that we’re able assist them.”
