The grand plan…

CONTACT’s grand print plan, explained in this video – or read below…

.

If CONTACT is to survive long term, I need a basic wage to compensate me for the long hours and hard work of producing what is not just a magazine, but a daily news web site, a fortnightly newsletter, several Facebook pages, a YouTube channel etc etc.

Currently, advertising sales cover CONTACT‘s running expenses, but are not enough to pay me a wage (I’m a way better editor than I am a salesman 😉 ) – and that’s not sustainable.

So my plan is to print CONTACT again for sale to subscribers – and in newsagents.

But I can’t afford to print it out of my own funds – I need enough subscribers/supporters on board before I can print.

.

Here’s how it works (in a nut shell)…

The funds raised through subscriptions at retail price, plus any extra supporter ‘donations’ (of which there are many – thank you guys!!!) will cover the cost of printing enough magazines to send to subscribers, plus extras that I can send to newsagents. And it’s the profit from newsagents’ sales that will give me the wage I need.

Here’s how it works (longer version)…

Printing presses are expensive to set up before any printing is done. In fact, it would cost about $12,000 to print and distribute the 1000-or-so magazines I need for subscribers. And that’s just not viable.

But, with the print press already set up, it ‘only’ costs about another $4000 to print and distribute an extra 6000 magazines.

Based on our own track record, I would expect to sell an average of 2000 magazines in newsagents, at roughly a $4 margin back to me.

That’s $8000 ‘profit’ per issue – or $32,000 per year.

And that’s the basic wage I (and CONTACT) need to survive long term.

The key…

I need about $16,000 Aussie dollars per issue to cover the print run

That’s the key to this whole plan – having enough subscribers and supporters signed up in advance to cover the cost of printing and distributing the subscriber magazines plus the extra shop copies.

Over on Patreon, I set a target of US$4000 per month before I would/could commit.

Adding the extra payment options above complicates or nullifies that as a sole or convenient target to keep an eye on – but the principal remains the same – and so does my commitment.

Decision deadline…

I have set 10 January 2019 as the decision deadline to say whether I will or will not print.

I need to know by then so that I have enough time to prepare the first magazine for the printing presses.

(Did you know it takes about three weeks to print a magazine, and another week to distribute?)

Q&A’s….

Question: Will I get my money back if you decide not to print CONTACT?

Answer: No. The admin would be far too complicated. Besides, the money raised between now and then is currently being used to advance this idea. Any excess will be invested in other aspects of CONTACT.

.

Question: So, if you decide not to print, isn’t that like theft or gambling?

Answer: I am asking you to invest in the dream of getting CONTACT back into print, for as little as $3 Aussie per month – the equivalent (not even) of a small cup of coffee.
The alternative is I’d have to gamble $16,000 per issue – and I simply can’t or won’t do that.
If enough of you subscribe and or opt for higher supporter levels, then CONTACT will get printed and you will get a copy mailed to your home or office.
Many of you have asked for it – so here’s the opportunity. If you really want it, you have to make this small gamble to get it. If you don’t, it won’t get printed. Simplez!
But, if we do this together, as a community, we can achieve anything (at least that’s what all the bullshit American pep-talkers I’ve binge listened to say 😉 ).

Question: You printed CONTACT in the past, but had to stop. What’s so different this time?

Answer: There are two main reasons I am confident it will work better this time.
First, the audience is much bigger. In the old days, I had a day job and spent all my ‘spare’ time putting CONTACT together. We didn’t advertise CONTACT (much). We simply put it in newsagents and hoped that interested buyers would find it and like it. It was a total gamble.
Today, with a daily web site (more than 50,000 unique visitors a month), fortnightly newsletter (11,000-ish emails), plus Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube etc etc, I can connect strongly and often with a ready-made audience and ‘advertise’ that we have a paper mag for sale.
The second reason is that, through my ‘grand plan’, the printing will be paid for in advance through subscriptions and other support from the CONTACT Patron Army. That way, I don’t have to get a day job, can spend that much more time promoting and developing CONTACT and don’t have to gamble my own money on a hope and a prayer.

.

Question: When will the first printed magazine be printed and delivered?

Answer: I’ve set 10 January next year as the deadline to reach the funding goal I need to proceed with printing.
If, on 10 January, we have reached or exceeded the funding goal, I will announce that printing will go ahead – then I’ll knuckle down to getting the magazine ready for printing, which will happen through February.
That first magazine would be issue number 61 dated 1 March 2019 – but subscribers should get it in the mail several days before that.

.

Question: What happens if you don’t reach your funding goal by 10 January?

Answer: There are two main alternatives…
If we are a long way off target and there’s no indication that we’ll get there in a reasonable timeframe, I may pull the pin on the whole idea – and make that announcement on 10 January. You will then be free to cancel your subscription and cut your losses.
On the other hand, if we’re close to target and trends indicate that we might reach it in a reasonable timeframe, then I would ask you to hang in while I defer the deadline to 10 April, in time to print issue 62 in June.

.

Question: Why is 1 March important?

Answer: CONTACT magazine was print based for its first 10 years, from issue 1 to issue 40 (March 2004 to December 2013).
We actually had to make a lot of sacrifices and we lost a lot of money keeping CONTACT in print until issue number 40 – we should have stopped at least two issues or more earlier, from a purely business sense – but we felt it was important to make the shift to digital on a logical round number – a significant milestone.
CONTACT went digital with issue number 41 on 1 March 2014, and we have maintained a strict production schedule ever since.
If we return to print on 1 March 2019 with issue number 61, that would be another significant milestone – exactly 20 issues or 5 years without print – and the 15th anniversary of issue number 1.
I think that’s a significant milestone worth aiming for.
