IMPORTANT Q&A’s….

Question: Will I get my money back if you decide not to print CONTACT?

Answer: No. Throughout the campaign to #printCONTACTagain, I made it as clear as I could there would be no refunds. All my editorials are still on this web site as well as these Q&As (which were formulated early, but are now modified to reflect the changed circumstances) addressing what would happen to the money if I didn’t print.
Most of the money raised thus far was used for specific #printCONTACTagain campaign purposes (see third question below). Any money left over – as well as new money still coming in (and huge thank yous to those people who didn’t cancel their ‘subscriptions’) – is being used to advance new CONTACT survival plans.

Question: So, if you decide not to print, isn’t that like theft or gambling?

Answer: I asked you to invest in a dream of getting CONTACT back into print. I was confident that printing would deliver enough revenue to ensure CONTACT’s future viability. That grand plan depended on recruiting about 1000 subscribers up front (we maxed out at 69!).
I figured that if we did this together, as a community, we could achieve anything (at least that’s what all the bullshit American pep-talkers I binge listened to said 😉 ).
The print idea has now officially failed (more detail here). I am now planning, plotting and deciding on CONTACT’s future – and using what little is left of of your ‘dream investments‘ made thus far to support that process.

 

QuestionAfter reading your latest editorial and finding out, sadly, that the print version is a no-go, can you please tell me what happens to the money I contributed so far?

Answer: All money collected during the campaign to #printCONTACTagain went into CONTACT’s general revenue, significant amounts of which was used directly to advance the campaign to this point – and will be used to advance new CONTACT survival plans.
For example, when Rosie and I went to the Australian Warrior Expo in Brisbane (for which CONTACT was a media partner – so, yes, we were going regardless), our focus at that expo was to promote the idea of CONTACT in print. Going to the expo cost us in the order of about $5000. That included expensive generic items such as fuel, accomodation, food etc. But then there were some specific items specifically designed to advance the #printCONTACTagain campaign, such as printing new trade-booth displays ($1200), CONTACT pens to attract people to our booth ($280) and printing fliers and subscription forms to hand out ($190).

 

Question: You printed CONTACT in the past, but had to stop. What was so different this time?

Answer: There were two main reasons I was confident it would work better this time.
First, the audience is much bigger. In the old days, I had a day job and spent all my ‘spare’ time putting CONTACT together. We didn’t advertise CONTACT, we simply put it in newsagents and hoped that interested individuals would find it and like it and buy it. It was a total gamble.
Today, with a daily web site (around 50,000 unique visitors a month), fortnightly newsletter (11,000-ish emails), plus Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube etc etc, I can connect strongly and often with a ready-made audience and could easily ‘advertise’ that we have a paper mag for sale.
The second reason was that, through my ‘grand plan’, the printing would be paid for in advance through subscriptions and other support from CONTACT fans. That way, I wouldn’t have to get a day job, could spend that much more time promoting and developing CONTACT and wouldn’t have to gamble my own money on a hope and a prayer.

Question: When will the first printed magazine be printed and delivered?

Answer: I initially set 10 January 2019 as the deadline to reach the funding goal I needed to proceed with printing. However, as of 10 December 2018, it was painfully obvious that the support was not forthcoming (more detail here).
Therefore, CONTACT will not be printed in 2019 – unless by some unforeseen miracle.

Question: So, if I ‘subscribed’ to CONTACT in print, but you’re not going to print it – what do I do now?

Answer: A significant reason I made the decision to ditch this print idea, in December instead of waiting until 10 January, is that I didn’t want DFSW Club members to pay another ‘subscription’ instalment in January when it was already obvious to me that printing was not going to happen. Best to tell you early and give you the opportunity to cancel your ‘subscription’ now.
So, please do not hesitate to cancel your subscription and cut your losses now – or at any time.
But if you do decide to continue supporting CONTACT, I will be most grateful and continue to strive to make it bigger, better and more viable – with your help.
